Also known as Kiev, Kyiv is the capital city of Ukraine. It is located on the Dnieper River and has a population of almost 3 million people. This is an important city as an educational, industrial, cultural and scientific center in Eastern Europe. With an extensive transport system, historic landmarks and high tech industries, the city gas been classified as a Beta global city in 2004.
The name Kyiv originated from one of the four founders of the city, Kyi. The city has a history of prominence and obscurity. It suffered a lot during the WWII when different architectural treasures and art were destroyed but the history of the city has been revived after extensive restorations were carried out. The city is now home to different types of modern structures as well as cultural center with a large number of tourists.
Many people wising to visit the capital city of Ukraine will be treated to world renowned and treasured arts and architecture. They can visit the Cathedral of St. Sophia where Kiev’s Princes were crowned. It has a wide collection of frescoes and mosaics from the 11th century. The other church is the Ukrainian Baroque, St. Andrew, which overlooks the old section of the city. Little distance from the city, the tourists can also enjoy viewing the Percherska Larva, known as the Monastery of the caves.
Apart from the architecture, tourists can also enjoy different types of performances in the city. The City’s Opera House has great opera as well as shows of ballet. The other cultural centers include the Kiev Young Theatre, which is very popular and shows plays in Russian or Ukrainian and the Ivan Franko Theatre, which stages different plays, musicals and drama.
